What are the most relevant diseases in a country? Which risk factors are the strongest contributors to disease and death? How is the impact of different diseases evolving over time, and how does it compare between countries and within subnational units? As the need for prioritising the use of available resources constantly increases, a timely, sound and comprehensive answer to these fundamental questions is more than ever needed to inform public health decision making. Driven by the impact of the Global Burden of Disease study, several researchers and national and international health institutes have adopted the burden of disease approach to address these questions.
The complexity of the burden of disease approach however resulted in major disparities in research capacity across Europe. The burden-eu COST Action will address current challenges by 1) stimulating interaction between existing efforts, 2) supporting technical capacity building at country level, 3) providing a platform to support methodological advances, and 4) addressing the need for an actionable understanding of the process underlying knowledge translation.
The Action will have an interwoven structure of 3 vertical and 2 horizontal pillars. The vertical pillars focus on specific burden of disease applications – i.e., non-communicable diseases and injuries (WG1), communicable diseases (WG2), and risk factors (WG3). The horizontal pillars focus on cross-cutting and holistic activities – i.e., burden of disease methodology (WG4) and knowledge translation (WG5). While the vertical pillars reflect the current fragmented nature of the burden of disease universe, the horizontal pillars provide the much needed bridge between these different worlds.

Unlike other sources of trauma, perinatal or birth-related trauma is relatively unrecognised. Evidence suggests up to 30% of women describe their birth experience as traumatic and experience some symptoms of intrusion, avoidance or hyper-arousal. Meta-analyses show post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) affects 4% of women after birth and up to 18% of women in high risk groups. Rectification of this situation is essential.
In 2016, 5.11 million babies were born in Europe, indicating that up to 1.5 million women may have had sub-optimal birth experiences and over 200,000 may have developed PTSD as a result. Developmental research has firmly established that the quality of infant-parent relationships is a critical factor in early and later childhood development, consequently, a family-centred approach to any investigation of birth-related trauma is critical, as trauma can be transmitted within the family system.
Given the enormous economic burden it places on women, health systems, and particularly children, relatively small improvements in services to prevent, detect and treat this problem can benefit society significantly.

CONSERVATION, PROTECTION AND USE JOINT CALL: official launch
The Joint Programming Initiative on Cultural Heritage and Global Change (JPI CH) is pleased to announce a new funding opportunity for transnational proposals.
The Conservation, Protection and Use call will support research into strategies, methodologies and tools to safeguard and use the physical components of our cultural heritage. It invites research projects that take a global approach to preserving Europe’s heritage and which result in a better understanding of our history, traditions and culture, of our individual and collective identities, and ultimately of our well-being.
Each project consortium must comprise at least three research teams, each from a different country participating in the JPI CH Conservation, Protection and Use Call and based in an eligible institution. The maximum number of research teams in a project is five.
Only beneficiaries located in the countries participating in the JPI CH Conservation, Protection and Use Call and eligible for the funding organization specified are eligible to apply, irrespective of their nationality.
The countries participating in this call are : Belarus, Cyprus, Czech Republic, France , Italy , Latvia , Norway , Poland, Portugal , Spain , The Netherlands, The United Kingdom.

Na sequência do Protocolo celebrado entre a Fundação para a Ciência e a Tecnologia, a L’Oréal Portugal e a Comissão Nacional da UNESCO em novembro de 2003, é aberto concurso para atribuição de quatro Medalhas de Honra L’Oréal Portugal para as Mulheres na Ciência.
As Medalhas de Honra L’Oréal Portugal para as Mulheres na Ciência destinam-se à realização de estudos avançados de investigação científica, a nível de pós-doutoramento, em universidades ou outras instituições portuguesas de reconhecido mérito, no domínio das Ciências, Engenharias e Tecnologias para a Saúde ou para o Ambiente.
Podem candidatar-se todas as doutoradas que tenham obtido o grau de doutoramento há menos de 5 anos até à data de abertura do concurso e que não completem, até ao final do ano em curso, mais de 35 anos.
Para efeitos do concurso, as candidatas que tenham filhos, podem solicitar a extensão (1 ano por cada filho) dos limites de idade e do período decorrido após conclusão do doutoramento anteriormente indicados. O pedido deve ser efetuado com a submissão da candidatura, e incluir os documentos de identificação (digitalizados) dos respetivos filhos.
