| Objectives: | The student should: (a) be acquainted with the main developments of schooling, teaching profession, and educational discourses (16th-20th centuries); (b) characterize the development of the Portuguese school system; (c) apply the historical and sociological knowledge to the analysis of educational phenomena and to the understand the teachers and the school cultures; (d) promote reflexive and critical analysis with the contents of teaching professional occupation and the processes involving their personal and professional career. |

| Contents: | Origins and emergence of educational systems (from sixteenth to eighteenth century). The building of "mass schooling" and Nation-state school systems (late nineteenth century - early twentieth century). The New Education Movement as an educational discourse at the nineteenth century. The expansion and crisis of the school systems (post II World War). History of the Portuguese educational system (late 18th-20th centuries). The professionalization of teachers and teaching (late 18th-20th centuries). The Democratization of the Portuguese School System. |

| Evaluation: | The students will be considered approved at SESO by two possible ways: 1. doing the final examination; 2. doing the different elements submitted by the lecturer over the semester. This last “model” consists in: one evaluation test (A), with contents of magistral lessons; and the presentation, in group-work, of different synthesis of the contents of the other lessons (B). Final classification will be obtained with the following formula: (2(A) + B)/3 | ||||||||||||||||
