Sidónio Serpa

Sidónio Serpa was born in Lisbon, Portugal, and took his University degree in Physical Education (4 years studies) in the Superior Institute of Physical Education of Lisbon (1975), and in Psychology (5 years studies) in the Superior Institute of Applied Psychology, Lisbon (1983).

He has a Master degree in Sport Sciences by the Faculty of Human Movement of the Technical University of Lisbon where he also is Professor Sport Psychology, since 1985 and Head of this Unit since 1995.

He has been invited speaker in Portugal and abroad, and has published in different national and international journals.

Being a former gymnast and gymnastics coach, he was Assistant Professor of Gymnastics at his University (1975/1980), developed relevant national and international activities in this field and presented top level teams of group gymnastics in several countries.

Sidónio Serpa was the Chairman of the 8th World Congress of Sport Psychology, he is the President of the Portuguese Society of Sport Psychology, Secretary General of the International Society of Sport Psychology, representative of Portugal at the European Federation of Sport Psychology and member of the Editorial board of several journals.

He is also Editor of the ISSP Bulletin in the International Journal of Sport Psychology.

Being a consultant of elite athletes, he was the only Portuguese sport psychologist to be a member of one Olympic team.

This took place during the Games of Atlanta where he belonged to the staff of the medallist Portuguese sailing team.

At the end of the day you may find him keeping in shape in the gymnastics rooms, swimming pools, or practising jogging along the Tagus river.
